EDU 776/LIS 724 Week 1 Introductions

 My name is Robin Hartsell, and I am working on my MLIS. I'm roughly a third of the way through my program. I have a BA in political science, an MPA, and an MA in history. I have worked for the federal government for the last 14 years and hope to get a position with an agency's office of the historian, Library of Congress, or National Archives once I've completed my program.

As I mentioned, I would like to work in an agency's office of the historian, Library of Congress, or National Archives. I'm not sure how well-known it is that many federal agencies have an office of the historian. The US Department of State, for example, has a very active office of the historian. One duty that is carried out by this office is the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) series. The FRUS contain volumes of information on the history of US foreign relations dating back to 1861.

I live in a small town in Illinois, which is about 100 miles northwest of Chicago. This town happens to be my hometown, and I just moved back last fall after swearing I would never live here again. Of course, my older sister said the same thing, and she lives up the street from me. I have a chihuahua mix named Missy who keeps me on my toes. I have included a link with more information about the town I live in.

I am really looking forward to this course since it covers areas of technology that I don't have much experience with so far. This is the first time I have ever had a blog so I definitely will appreciate some constructive feedback. Also, I am looking forward to working with my fellow students who are from different programs to get views from various areas.

 Where do I fit? Image Source: LucidChart For this week, I decided to use the Triple E framework. (The e's are for engagement, enhancement, and extension with all for learning goals.) Triple E spoke to me because it is straightforward and the ideas appear easy to incorporate. EDU 776/LIS 724 Week 6 Designing for Accessibility

  Image Source: Audioeye When I think about how assistive technology can help people, Stephen Hawking comes to mind.  Even though he had physical limitations due to ALS, he was able to communicate, to do research, to write, and to continue his life through assistive technology.  Through muscle and eye movements, Hawking was able to operate the computer that was attached to his wheelchair.   While Hawking's computer and wheelchair were very advanced and, most likely, very costly, as a general rule assistive technology does not have to be expensive to in order to be of service to someone. EDU 776/LIS724 Week 4 Active Learning

  Image Source: View Sonic  For this week, I read the blog post "The American Revolution…It’s Like We Were There!"   I think this project is an excellent example of active learning.  The teacher for this project used many types of activities to involve her students.  First, the classroom was decorated with photos and posters about events and individuals from the American Revolution.  Students were able to see and read these items every day in their classrooms.  Second, students learned to use PicCollage and were able to add themselves into some very famous portraits.  Third, through the use of AudioBoom (a podcast service), students were able to listen to various readings including the reading of the Declaration of Independence.  Students not only learned about the American Revolution, but they also learned some new technology skills.
