EDU 776/LIS 724 Week 5 Copyright and Fair Use

Image Source: Great Ormond Street Hospital   Peter Pan  isn't necessarily the first thing someone thinks of when considering copyright and fair use, but the book is an excellent example of copyright use.  Author J.M. Barrie gifted the rights to the book Peter Pan to the Great Ormond Street Hospital, which is a children's hospital in England, in 1929.  Royalties from the book helped to fund the hospital and its work.  In the UK, the copyright expired 1987, but British Parliament passed a law stating that all royalties from any production or publishing of Peter Pan,  be it the book, play, audio recording, etc. would go to the hospital for eternity.  This is quite a unique situation since in most circumstances there are time limits on copyrights. While in the UK, the Great Ormond Street Hospital, has the...

EDU 776/LIS724 Week 4 Active Learning

Image
Image Source: View Sonic  For this week, I read the blog post "The American Revolution…It’s Like We Were There!"   I think this project is an excellent example of active learning.  The teacher for this project used many types of activities to involve her students.  First, the classroom was decorated with photos and posters about events and individuals from the American Revolution.  Students were able to see and read these items every day in their classrooms.  Second, students learned to use PicCollage and were able to add themselves into some very famous portraits.  Third, through the use of AudioBoom (a podcast service), students were able to listen to various readings including the reading of the Declaration of Independence.  Students not only learned about the American Revolution, but they also learned some new technology skills. If it is at all possible, teachers should use active learning in their lessons.  Active learning he...

Regular or Just Visiting?                                           I appreciate author David White's description of resident or visitor when it comes to considering our time on apps and websites.  My professional and personal sites are somewhat different, and I certainly spend a different amount of time on sites and apps depending what I am doing.  I use Microsoft products especially Teams every day at work.  Sometimes, it feels like I am always on Teams, either for a meeting or for working on projects.  At work, I use YouTube to review training videos, but at home, I use YouTube to watch capybara and cute dog videos.  My work has a strict policy about using FaceBook during work time and on work computers--it is strictly prohibited.  Personally, I'm on FaceBook after work at least once. Of all the sites and apps, Google is the one I use the most ...

EDU 776/LIS 724 Week 2 Frameworks

Image
Where do I fit? Image Source: LucidChart For this week, I decided to use the Triple E framework. (The e's are for engagement, enhancement, and extension with all for learning goals.) Triple E spoke to me because it is straightforward and the ideas appear easy to incorporate. The Triple E website provides a great deal of information including tools, a blog, and information on professional development. Even though it was easy for me to pick a framework, the challenge I have this week is that I am not in education. Where do I fit? I thought about this question for a bit. While I do not work in a formal education setting, I did recently because an adjunct instructor at my office, and I will be working on revamping some training for my unit. I looked at Triple E with this lens and found that I can apply the same framework to my upcoming instructor assignments. One point that Triple E stresses is reflective thinking. I think this concept is so important regardless ...

EDU 776/LIS 724 Week 1 Introductions

My name is Robin Hartsell, and I am working on my MLIS. I'm roughly a third of the way through my program. I have a BA in political science, an MPA, and an MA in history. I have worked for the federal government for the last 14 years and hope to get a position with an agency's office of the historian, Library of Congress, or National Archives once I've completed my program. As I mentioned, I would like to work in an agency's office of the historian, Library of Congress, or National Archives. I'm not sure how well-known it is that many federal agencies have an office of the historian. The US Department of State, for example, has a very active office of the historian. One duty that is carried out by this office is the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) series. The FRUS contain volumes of information on the history of US foreign relations dating back to 1861. I live in a small town in Illinois, which is about 100 miles northwest of Chicago. ...
